Literature Text

Etalus is a heavy character, with a balance between zoning capabilities and a hard-hitting combo game. Even in comparison to the rest of the cast, he's HUGE but more horizontal then he is vertical, leaving him susceptible to angled attacks from above but lowering his vulnerability to crossups. Despite packing a parry mechanic like Absa, he does come equipped with a command throw-the only one in his home series!-and is otherwise horizontal where Absa is vertical. Despite both hailing from Aether, the two are nothing alike.

{Move descriptions taken from his movelist in Rivals of Aether.}

Normals:

5A: Jab 1
5B: Jab 2
5C: Jab 3
2A: down tilt 1
2B: down tilt 2
2C: dash attack
j.A: neutral aerial
j.B: back aerial (used forwards)
j.C: down aerial

Command normals:

3C: up tilt (Universal launcher)
j.6C: forward aerial (functions as a block if held)
j.4C: back aerial (used backwards)

Specials:

QCF.(A/B/C): forward tilt
Creates ice on the floor as well as doing damage. Light is as quick as a single breath, safe on block but doesn't do too much. Medium is still pretty fast and ices a bit more of the floor...zero on block. Heavy does amazing damage for a utility and launches slightly horizontally, along with great area coverage-but isn't safe, and without previous setup it functions as an ender. All three strengths deal good chip damage.

DP.(A/B/C): up aerial
An anti-air grab that can be used both on the ground and in the air. (Question to self: have no difference between strengths or have each strength grab in a different direction?)

Throw: Parry
No throws here! Just a parry, but deflects/reflects all projectiles and puts physical attackers into a momentary stun if they used a normal attack. [uses magic if parrying an EX or super]

Magic: ? segments long
Fills over time.
Each segment allows you to do one move of many, most being smashes. Some of these moves can be done without magic.

QCF.D: forward strong (charge back>6.(A/B/C))
There is no difference between versions, but the magic version has super armor.

QCB.D: down strong
Hits overhead.

DP.D: up strong (charge down>8.(A/B/C))
Like f-strong, has super armor on startup.

6D: forward special (QCF.EX)
Where it hits, there's ice. It would be OP, but it takes magic (or half a meter) barely deals any damage.

5D: Ice Armor
Pretty much neutral special, but without the hammer. That's saved for...

Supers:

HCF.ABC: "Hammer Drop" 1bar
Heavily buffed from Aether into super format. Super flash takes up most of the charge time and what remains is shortened. Deals a ton of damage and breaks through guards.

QCFQCF.(A/B/C): "Icicle Storm" 1bar
Basically forward special buffed into super format. So many ice shards raining down on the opponent...

Taunt:

QCB>QCD.EX
Snooore...until you touch the controller again.

Statistics:

Speed: Low (higher on ice)
Health: High
Movement: Can wavedash in both directions; after wavedashing input 4, 1, 2, 3, or 6 to keep wavedashing
Jump: No super, no double

Story:

Etalus is a legendary warrior in his native land, the northern continent known as the Ice Barrens. He is one of the last surviving members of the Harbor Guard, an elite battalion that once defended the Hyperboreans, the peoples of the Ice Barrens. The Harbor Guard battled other elemental factions on land and sea in order to protect their coast and keep trade routes open to the Water Merchants in the south.

However, in the past two decades, few from the southern continent of Aether have had any contact with Harbor Guard or any other representative of the north. Most people assume that the Harbor Guard was defeated, and the Hyperboreans had to retreat further inland.

In reality, Etalus and the Harbor Guard left their posts to battle a deadly threat from the northern reaches: the Black Ice. While the Harbor Guard were focused on their southern harbors, creatures of ice and shadow descended on the Hyperboreans in a sudden onslaught of slaughter and destruction. The Harbor Guard rushed, too late, to defend this new northern front. Many brave ice warriors fell. Etalus now hunts alone, stalking the northern reaches for Black Ice. The remaining Hyperboreans have pushed deeper into the tundras to the west, looking for a safe place to rebuild their homes.

Long afterwards, Etalus catches word of one of the foremost fighters of Aether mysteriously disappearing. An appearance of the Black Ice, perhaps? But that would have been farther south then they'd ever gotten before! Etalus forces himself to investigate, but soon finds himself at an impasse by a giant thunderstorm...and soon after that finds himself somewhere wholly unfamiliar.

Now Etalus is trapped in a world facing a threat that outclasses that Black Ice itself...and he's classified as part of the problem...
I seem to be good at these. I have no idea how balanced these are; all I know is that Etalus seems to be better suited to a 3-button style fighting game than Absa is.
I admit, the story for this one is slightly more of a butt-pull; but the implications of a friendly predator (lowercase) within Foenum leads to a lot more interesting conversations.
Oh yeah, and Velvet gains magic faster while standing on Etalus's ice; this is to make up for his RIDICULOUS rushdown potential with that stuff laid on the floor. (Plus, it makes sense within the realm of reason.)
